A free initiative is looking to change the script when it comes to female boxing in Glasgow.

Boxing Scotland, the official organisation for Olympic Boxing in the country, has organised free classes for women and girls in a bid to increase the number of women who take part in the sport and fix the imbalance in the male-to-female ratio.

Glasgow Times:

Cameron McAlpine, development officer for Boxing Scotland, told the Glasgow Times: “Our main target with these classes is to increase participation in female boxing.

“We noticed that the numbers of coaches and participants in boxing were lacking in terms of female participation, there was a big split.

“So, we want to balance the ratio in the sport and create a blanket in the sport for women and girls.

“It may be a pipe dream, but a girl could join these classes and then be part of Team Scotland in a few years, you just never know.”

Glasgow Times:

The classes, which will take place at Argo Boxing Club in Drumchapel, officially launch on March 9 and will run every Saturday (between 10.30am and 11.30am) until March 30.

They will be for girls 10 years and over, with no cap or limit on the age of participation in case attendees are older and wish to get involved.

The classes will be completely free of charge and are aimed at absolute beginners to provide a pathway into boxing, and will focus on footwork and drills, as well as health and fitness.

Cameron expanded: “We won’t just be focusing on health and fitness.

“We will be doing warmups and boxing techniques which will include footwork, drills, punch techniques and proper stance when using the bags.

“It will be a complete beginner introduction to the sport. These starting classes are all just about grassroots development in the sport.”

All of the sessions will be coached by women.

The classes will also operate on a cycle basis, which will see them run for four weeks before commencing again in the summer and so forth.

Boxing Scotland is also hoping to run similar classes at an advanced level in the future.

The initiative comes after a successful pilot last year which contained classes on a six-week block in various places across the city.

And as classes have already gained plenty of interest after being announced just under two weeks ago, it is clear that the women and girls of Glasgow are ready for round two.
